How To Clean Your Microwave

The microwave is an essential appliance in most modern homes, because of how useful it is. Despite being so useful, it is often neglected when it comes to a full clean of the house. The reason might be that cleaning a microwave is not easy, right? Wrong!

Cleaning your microwave is not as difficult as you might think. A few helpful life hacks can save the day and get your microwave squeaky clean without the need for harsh chemicals!

It is important to know why your wonder appliance needs to be cleaned regularly. It may not be visible to the naked eye, but a filthy microwave could be a breeding ground for germs. Splattered food particles, warmth and moisture make your microwave an ideal place for germs to multiply. Heating or cooking food in such a contaminated environment can be a risk to your health.

Water and Vinegar Solution

For a quick and easy solution, take a microwave safe bowl and fill it half-way with water. Add about a tablespoon of white vinegar to the bowl and place it in the microwave to be heated on high for about 5 minutes.

The steam that builds up during this process loosens the particles dried on the walls, which can then be easily wiped off with a clean washcloth.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Add 4 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda (aka bicarb) to a bowl of warm water and stir vigorously to mix up any lumps.

Dip a piece of cloth or sponge into this mixture and wipe the inside of the microwave thoroughly. Now, take equal parts of water and white vinegar in a microwave safe bowl and bring it to a boil for about 3 minutes inside the microwave.

Leave the door shut for 10 more minutes so that the steam builds up on the walls. Open the door and wipe clean the interior.

This uses the same ingredients that my chemist grandfather used to use to clean the drains.

Clean your Microwave with Lemons

Lemons are handy in any household, and they are a good way to clean microwaves. Fill a microwavable bowl with water and drop a few cut chunks of lemon into it. Let this mixture boil for about 3 to 4 minutes, until the steam builds up on the inside of the microwave.

Do not open the door for another 5 minutes as the steam works upon the stubborn splatters of food. Finally, after 5 minutes, wipe the interior of the microwave to make it dazzlingly clean.

Soapy Water

A common and handy cleaning hack is using dishwashing soap.

Add a generous amount of dishwashing liquid to a microwave safe bowl with warm water. Set the microwave for two minutes and let this mixture boil and develop steam inside.

After the timer goes off, leave the door closed and let the steam work for 5 minutes. Open the door and wipe the walls until thoroughly clean.

Hopefully these hacks create a magical experience for you when next cleaning your microwave.
